Finding the Balance

It started with weaning you from the breast.
Assisting you in your determination to walk.
Then run.
Filling my heart with joy the first time you said Mama and meant it.
Watching you hit your first bomb and cheering for you as your rounded all four bases.
Eliminating diapers was our biggest challenge but this past week you decided to kicked the habit.

And tonight you choked up your Mom at bath time.
When did you get tall enough to walk out of the tub yourself?
When did you learn how to get dressed all by yourself?

"Mom, I don't need you, I can do it" as you fumbled trying to unroll your pajama shirt.

It was the first time you spoke those words to me.
And while my heart was filled with pride because I know you "can do it", it was also filled with sadness.
How did it happen?
When did you go from toddler to kid?

donniegrowingup6242008.jpgYou are growing so quickly peanut.

I am watching you unfold into an such a smart little man.

But maybe slow down a little?

Or at least amuse your old Mom and pretend to ask me for help getting your PJ's on at night.

He looks just like you.

I'm constantly offering my youngest help, and she won't accept it. It's so bittersweet, eh?

I've got two who are polar opposites. One clings to her Mommy, the other is an "I'll do it myself!" kinda gal. They both LOVE Pop'rs, though. Pop'rs are a unique seasoning that goes with just about any kind of food, from applesauce to yogurt. Life just gets better with Pop'rs in the equation. We're having a giveaway, so please check us out at http://poprs.blogspot.com/2008/06/giveaway-tuesday.html

The day Bug stops needing me will be the hardest day of my life. Butterfly stopped needing me at birth. Seriously, she pushes me away and says Me, Me, Me. At one, she is the most stubborn and independent little thing. Wonder where she gets that from.

It is a TRADGEDY when they go from kid to ADULT. Oh.. my... GAWD. I have LOVED raising our three. I so get along with them. I so want to keep them forever! lol

awww. they just refuse to stop growing don't they!? It's a magical thing watching them grow & learn though.

Hang in there, he will never completely not need mom.

Damn - he sure does look like you. My youngest is 2 1/2 now, and I still think she's a baby, but that's me wanting her to stay a baby.

*Sigh* I don't want this to happen.... My 14 mo old already takes SHOWERS. And soaps up herself.

Oh sweetie, I feel your bittersweet heartbreak. They grow up far too quickly. My heart melts just seeing his sweet face.

Oh that was so bittersweet. Yea for Donnie, and so sad for you.

What a great post, and now I am dreading those words from our little ones. :(

Oh... so achingly sweet..and gut wrenching ...all in the same moment.

They do grow up so quickly don't they? It's amazing to watch them transform from little babies into little people, to watch their personalities emerge and see them become independant, but at the same time it's a little bitter sweet when we know we've taught them what we can and they can now do it for themselves.

Gulp. I´m terrified of hitting that milestone. My oldest is already becoming more independent and while I´m happy for him, it´s so sad that my baby is getting big enough to not need me anymore. But he still comes running when he´s hurt or hungry or sad. :)

ugh. We are hitting that stage as well and it is heart wrenching.I just want to freeze him in time...where he still thinks I am the greatest thing since sliced bread!

How sweet and sad. I know what exactly what you mean though. They are young for such a short time.
