Things that make you go awwww..

My husbands father passed away in 2002, so our kids never got a chance to meet their Poppy.   So every year, since Donnie was born, my husband takes him to the cemetery on Father's Day.  Even though Donnie never got the opportunity to meet his Poppy, he knows who he is from stories and pictures.  And we have done the best we can trying to explain heaven to him, but at three he still does not grasp the idea.

This past Sunday, my husband took Donnie to the cemetary.  They stopped at the florist first and picked up blue flowers, per Donnie's suggestion.

As they placed the flowers on the plot, Donnie said "Daddy, I don't think Poppy is home right now"
My husband was curious and asked, "Why do you say that?"
Donnie said, "Isn't that what the sign says?"

Amazing observation. Children that age are wise beyond their years and the observations that they make (and verbalize for that matter) are amazing. I really work hard to just listen and validate what my kids say - Especially my oldest - he says some of the most profound, profound things.

I work with children with cancer and unfortunately have to deal with death more frequently than anyone should (although it should be noted that almost 80% of kids with cancer survive), and so I am frequently dealing with kids and their concept of heaven, afterlife and death - It is absolutely amazing what they say! I learn from them EVERY day! Good for you for taking a moment to ponder!

LOVE your blog by the way!

Awwwww, that is very sweet.

Chet's dad passed away before we were even married. That is very special that your hubby takes Donnie and some day Aaron to the gravesite. What a special tradition that is making for your family.

I have something for you when you get a free moment! :) Might explain the people you haven't heard of before who are visiting.

Silly boy! My dad passed away before the last two were born. We were trying to get pregnant for a while with Emma but didn't until right after he died. And she is so like him I know he definitely had a hand in bringing her to us!

Oh that is SO sweet. I hope that when I have children, to bring them to my Dad's grave and tell them lots of great stories about their Pop-Pop!

Sniffle.

My Father-in-law passed away in 2003, so I totally understand. On Sunday, we used hi beach umbrella and a stand he made for it at the beach and my mom said, "well, he's here with us than, isn't he?"

Donnie is so cute! I love observant children! My grandfather passed a year before I was born and I too know him by pictures and hilarious stories.

That is so sweet, and so clever! The things they think of :) Hope your hubby had a wonderful Father's Day.

The things that kids say. I'm glad your hubby is passing on the good memories.

I think it's so hard to explain death and mortality to such a young person but I think it's great your husband takes Donnie with him every year...even though he never met his Poppy, they still have a connection through these visits.

Wow. I'm a little teary after reading that.

Oooooo, ya gotta love that. It's always hard to know how the kids will react or whether they'll comprehend what's going on. Then you hear them say remarkable things (like that!) and it just warms your heart. And, sometimes, they help us make it through.

Beautiful story.
